Press Release - Sir Michael Wilkins


Michael Wilkins, the academy principal and chief executive of Outwood Grange Academies Trust, has had the honour of Knighthood conferred upon him in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List.

His citation reads ‘Sir Michael was one of the first headteachers to be appointed a National Leader of Education in recognition of the national impact he has made supporting schools across the country since 2006. He was the driving force at Outwood Grange Family of Schools in the north of England, which he led to academy status. As an academy sponsor, he has pioneered a hugely successful and high impact model of intervention, transforming schools in special measures at pace’.

He arrived at what was then Outwood Grange in 2001 and under his leadership the school went through a rapid transformation to become the outstanding academy it is today. Outwood Grange has had record results year on year since he joined the school in 2001, culminating 84% 5+ A*-Cs including English and maths in 2013.

Sir Michael said “I am delighted with this honour as it also recognises and reflects the achievements of the wider Family of Schools and the dedication and commitment of fellow colleagues and governors who have worked closely with me over a number of years”.

The work of the staff at Outwood Grange Academy has gone on to support thousands of students across the North of England whilst at the same time the quality of education for the students at the academy has never been compromised.
